New Delhi: Ukrainian security forces have eliminated an elite Chechen hit squad sent to assassinate President Volodymyr Zelensky.

As per the reports, Ukrainian officials claimed that Kadyrovites – a unit of elite Chechen Special Forces – were involved in the assassination plot.

Earlier, Zelensky had said that after Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a special operation in neighbouring Ukraine he was Russia’s top target for assassination.

Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council chief Oleksiy Danilo also made a sensational revelation claiming that Ukrainian authorities were tipped off about the plot by members of Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB).

Danilo claims that these Russian members of the FSB are against Putin’s invasion.

Meanwhile, Zelensky on Wednesday accused Russia of seeking to erase Ukrainians, their country and their history.

In a video address, the Ukrainian leader said a missile strike on a target at the site of a Holocaust massacre shows that for many people in Russia our Kyiv is completely foreign.

“They know nothing about our capital. About our history. But they have an order to erase our history. Erase our country. Erase us all,” he said.

Last Thursday, Putin ordered troops to invade pro-Western Ukraine to “de-militarise” and “denazify” the country.

As of today, the Russian military has damaged more than 1,500 military facilities in Ukraine, with Russia’s defence ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov Konashenkov saying that 58 planes, 46 drones and 472 tanks and other armoured vehicles have also been destroyed.

Several countries including the UK, the US, Canada, and the European Union have condemned Russia’s military operations in Ukraine and imposed hard sanctions on Moscow. These countries have also promised Ukraine to help with military aid to fight Russia.

Addressing the European Parliament on Tuesday, the Ukrainian President had said that people are fighting for their land and freedom.

Nobody is going to break us, we are strong, we are Ukrainians, he said.
