Washington: The United States will provide four more M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS)to Ukraine to boost the defences of the war-torn country. The announcement in this regard was made by US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin.

On Tuesday, Ukraine requested the US to send more HIMARS, reported AFP. Till now, the US has already provided 12 HIMARS to Ukraine. The Ukrainian forces claimed to have destroyed 30 Russian command stations and ammunition depots so far.

“Washington will send four more HIMARS advanced rocket systems for a total of 16. The Ukrainians have made excellent use of HIMARS, and you can see the impact on the battlefield,” Austin said as quoted by AFP.

Washington will also send additional GMLRS ammunition. It can precisely strike targets up to 80 kilometres away. As per the AFP report, on Tuesday, requested the US a major increase in the supply of HIMARS. Reznikov said that at least 100 were needed for an effective counter-offensive against Russian troops.

The Ukrainian Defence Minister also demanded longer-range ammunition to fight Russian troops. So far US President Joe Biden’s administration has refused to send longer-range ammunition to Ukraine to avoid a direct clash with Russia fearing that Ukrainian forces could use these weapons to carry out strikes inside the Russian territory.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24. The fighting has intensified in the eastern part of Ukraine in the Donbas region comprising two separatist republics of Donetsk and Lugansk. Earlier this month, Russia claimed to have captured Lugansk.
