New Delhi/Islamabad: Leader of the Opposition in Pakistan’s National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday said that Article 6 of the Constitution will be slapped on Imran Khan and the Speaker of the NA, soon after deputy speaker Qasim Khan Suri dismissed no-trust motion against the Prime Minister.

Voting on the no-confidence motion against Imran Khan was to be held today, but the deputy speaker dismissed the resolution citing Article 5 (loyalty to the state).

What is Article 6 of Pakistan’s Constitution

Article 6 of the Constitution of Pakistan refers to “high treason”. It says: “Any person who abrogates or subverts or suspends or holds in abeyance, or attempts or conspires to abrogate or subvert or suspend or hold in abeyance, the Constitution by use of force or show of force or by any other unconstitutional means shall be guilty of high treason.”

Further, clause two of the article says any person aiding or abetting or collaborating the acts shall likewise (be) of high treason. Another clause says an act of high treason shall not be validated by any court including the Supreme Court and a High Court. Also, Parliament shall by law provide for the punishment of persons found guilty of high treason.

No-trust motion against Khan dismissed

The Deputy Speaker dismissed the no-trust confidence motion against the PM after Fawad Chaudhry, a minister in the Imran Khan government, said there was foreign hand which wanted a regime change and therefore it was important for the National Assembly to decide whether a third country can change government in Pakistan. Suri said the motion should be according to the Constitution. He said minister’s points were valid and no foreign power shall be allowed to topple an elected government through a conspiracy.

Pakistan President Arif Alvi dissolved the Assembly on the advice of PM Khan, necessitating elections in 90 days.

Shehbaz Sharif slams Imran Khan

After the resolution against Khan was dismissed, Sharif said it was nothing short of a high treason. He said Imran Khan has pushed the country into anarchy. “Niazi & his cohort will not be allowed to go scot-free. There will be consequences for blatant & brazen violation of the Constitution. Hope SC will play it’s role to uphold the Constitution,” he said on Twitter.
