Islamabad: Lt Gen Asim Munir to be appointed as Pakistan’s new Army Chief. After days of speculation, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has decided to appoint Lieutenant General Asim Munir as the next Army Chief of pakistan.

Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb announced that Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has decided to appoint Lt Gen Sahir Shamshad Mirza as the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC).

“The Prime Minister of Pakistan Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has decided to appoint Lt. Gen. Sahir Shamshad Mirza as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Lt. Gen. Syed Asim Munir as the Chief of the Army Staff using the constitutional authority,” Pakistan Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb tweeted.

The Pakistan Information minister and Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said that the appointment have been done in accordance with the Constitution.

It may be recalled that outgoing Pakistan Army Chief Qamar Javed Bajwa was supposed to retire in 2019. However, his tenure was extended by then-prime minister Imran Khan in August 2019. Gen Bajwa will retire next week.

Lt Gen Munir joined military after completing the Officers Training School programme in Mangla and his first commissioning was with the Frontier Force Regiment.

Lt Gen Munir is considered to a close aide of outgoing Pakistan Army Chief Gen Bajwa.

The next Pakistan Army Chief commanded the troops in the Force Command Northern Areas as a brigadier under General Bajwa.

Pakistan’s defence minister has warned Imran Khan, saying that the government will deal with him after appointment of the new Army chief.
