Seattle: Jaahnavi Kandula, an Indian student, was killed in January after she was hit by the police vehicle driven by Officer Kevin Dave. Following her death, videos of the cops mocking her death have sparked outrage amongst Indians across the world. Taking the incident and reports into notice, the Indian Consulate in San Francisco has demanded a “thorough investigation”.
This intervention from the Indian consulate comes after bodycam footage of the cops was released in the public domain. In the video, Daniel Auderer, vice president of the Seattle Police Officers Guild, can be heard mocking Kandula’s death and saying that “she was of limited value”.
After Jaahnavi’s death, Daniel Auderer was assigned to check if Officer Kevin Dave was under the influence while driving. In the bodycam footage, Auderer can be seen laughing about the deadly crash with the President of the Seattle Police Officers Guild.
In his call with the guild’s president, Auderer can heard be joking about her death and saying that the president should just “write it off with a cheque of $11,000”. After this footage was released, a Seattle Police Watchdog agency launched a probe into the incident and the cops involved – Kevin Dave and Daniel Auderer.
Taking the matter into notice, the Indian Consulate in San Francisco stated that the media reports about Jaanhavi’s death are “deeply troubling”.
“Recent reports including in media of the handling of Ms Jaahnavi Kandula’s death in a road accident in Seattle in January are deeply troubling. We have taken up the matter strongly with local authorities in Seattle & Washington State as well as senior officials in Washington DC,” stated the Consulate.
