A 45-year-old man is dead after crashing his vehicle into a canal in Schomberg early Friday morning.
It happened near Highway 9 and Eight Concession Road at around 12:30 a.m.
Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said that a 23-year-old passenger in the vehicle managed to get out with minor injuries and attempted to “flag down assistance.”
“He advised the vehicle he had been a passenger in had left the highway and was in the canal upside down with the driver inside,” Schmidt said in a video update posted to Twitter. “Fire and rescue attended the location, located a 45-year-old male inside that vehicle and extricated him from the vehicle, although he was pronounced deceased at the scene.”
Schmidt said that Highway 9 was closed for several hours to accommodate the investigation but has since reopened.
At this point it remains unclear what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway.
“The Aurora OPP are continuing the investigation and anyone with information or witnesses are asked to call (police),” Schmidt said.
