chilling video shows shark attacking russian man; he dies

A heart-wrenching video has surfaced online showing a Russian man being attacked and dragged underwater by a shark in Egypt. The man died after being mauled by the shark, Egyptian and Russian authorities informed.

The incident took place off coast of Egypt’s Red Sea resort city of Hurghada on Thursday, according to reports. The country’s Environment Ministry in a Facebook post said that the man died after being attacked by the “tiger shark” near the Elysees Dream Beach hotel at the popular Egyptian resort of Hurghada.

The shark has been caught and was being examined in a laboratory to ascertain the possible caused of the rate attack, the ministry said. Authorities closed off a 74-kilometre stretch of the coastline, and announced it would be closed for swimming or other water sports activity till Sunday.

A chilling video of the incident has gone viral on social media showing a man being repeatedly attacked by a shark circling around him and then being dragged under water. The man was seen struggling to resist the shark attack but to no avail.

Some people rushed to help the victim after a lifeguard from a nearby hotel raised the alarm, but were not able to reach him in time.

Russian Consul-General Viktor Voropayev told state-owned TASS news agency that the Russian national was 23-year-old and was not a tourist, but a permanent resident of Egypt.

The Russian consulate urged Russian tourists to remain alert when in the water and to strictly follow any swimming bans imposed by local authorities.
